Chickering & Sons

The first great American piano manufacturer, established in Boston in 1823 by Jonas Chickering.

He rigorously trained his three sons and in 1852 they joined Jonas in partnership. The company remained as Chickering & Sons until 1908 when it merged with Knabe to form the American Piano Company.

In the latter half of the 19th century there was a great rivalry with Steinway, but all agree that both houses produced pianos of magnificent quality.

Franz Liszt also owned a Chickering (which apparently he could not destroy) as did Edvard Grieg.
